Vehicle General

Vehicle - overview

Your vehicle will not only be your means of transporting you around the wilderness that is much of southern Africa, often on harsh roads & tracks, but also your home for maybe a year or more.

It is therefore vitaly important the vehicle is up to the job, you feel confident with and in it and you are reasonably adept at roadside repairs especially if you intend heading off the beaten track.

The drop down pages cover most of the vehicle issues that related to our vehicle and our adventure.

Yes, we may have been over-engineered and over-cautious but we were travelling solo, in remote and rough areas with no back up: if we were stuck or broken-down we would have to get ourselves going again, hence the numerous vehicle modifications and equipment carried.

A standard Land Rover Defender is more than capable of coping with 90% of the African roads and tracks with the added advantage than standard spares are much more readily available than specialised modified parts ... but what about the other 10% that needs exploring?
